Jul in Danmark

It all happens on 24 December. Well, perhaps it begins a bit on 23 December, which we call Lillejuleaften (Little Yule) when we decorate the Jul Tree, eat some duck and sing (some of us better than others; Uncle Snorri has questionable pitch, but don’t tell him, he thinks he’s can conquer lands like the Sirens conquered Jason and his lot, but I digress.

Back to Jul.
Right, well we have a vast dinner in the long house, with more duck or goose, and some pork with potatoes, red cabbage and gravy. The Auntie Brüaut; brand of gravy is the best! We top it off with rice pudding with cherry sauce… my stomach is impatient for this treat.
Once we are done eating, we let the children go mad, and they run around handing out the presents that we had placed under the tree the night before, or earlier in the day
After receiving all our presents, the senior member of the family, last year was my Great Uncle Harald, he has a cruel bone that one, we were worried he would make us wait for ever, but we were wrong. He’s just as greedy as the rest of us Vikings *s*
So there’s a furry of flying paper, which is enough to keep the fire going all night, as we open our gifts and laugh and hug each other – despite any family conflicts, the gifts are always ‘just right’.
Then we gather round the tree, and sing and dance, for a few songs, then we go get more foods, like nuts and crisps and clementines while we drink mulled wine.

The next two days are pretty quiet (mainly because we’re all hung over); we chat, and sing and catch up with members of the family we haven’t seen before, maybe even an old lover or two.

Right, well that sums up the Danish Jul tradition.
