DID SOMEONE SAY WAR HOUND?
I have traveled a long way to this desolate and barren place to meet the famous Scathach. Instead I am greeted by a giant who issues a challenge. Before me goes a woman and a Saxon. I think I have a good chance at this game. It will be a way to pass some time while I wait to meet the Mother of All Warriors.
So I am to toughen my feet on this hot stone, do a Coil and then a Salmon Leap to the island. I look and look but I can't even see the island at all for the mists. How do I know where it is? The first two tricks are easy enough. Leaping blind into the mist is the real challenge here.
I am barefoot already so I start dancing on the firey stones. Underneath there are red hot flames showing through. While I dance I admire the color of them, blood red, a warrior's delight. I put my mind somewhere else when my heels start burning. After they burn for awhile I know I won't feel anything at all. I think of the red fire as the sunset of the day, the bonfire of Beltane, the blood of my enemies, the passion of my lover's heart. Anything but what it really is. I dance and I sing my war song, loud and proud.
When the moment is just right, I thrust the butt of my spear down into one of the smaller red cracks of the stones. At the same time, I coil the muscles of my legs and hop onto the tip of the spear. There I balance as light as a feather while the giant observes this.
In the one second that I am poised, I shut my eyes, take a deep breath and think of all I know about Scathach. I see her face. I hear her laughter. I smell her breath and her blood. Where is she? I find her and launch myself in that direction.
I leave the spear quivering in the stone when I leap. In the air I twist and arch my back. I fly from the red fire into the white mists.
