How to make a Snooker Table laugh
The context of this story is perhaps as important as the joke.
Some years, ago, Andy Cameron hosted a Sunday morning radio programme, and a regular feature was his invitation for youngsters to call him with their jokes. On this particular Sunday I was driving into Oban to collect the Sunday newspapers, and tuned in.
Andy had several young comedians on, and then a wee lass of 6 or 7 called in with her joke - 'How do you make a Snooker table laugh?' I could tell that this was one that Andy hadn't heard. He asked the essential question, and she said 'Put your hands in its pockets and tickle its balls.'. Andy's reaction was hysterical. He guffawed and nearly cried, and was reduced to tears. I was laughing so much I had to pull in to the side of the road and laugh with him.
For a couple of minutes, nobody in that BBC Scotland studio could move to put on a record or anything. All that could be heard was the sound of Andy Cameron's deep laughter. As I sat there, another car came towards me, the driver with a huge grin on his face. He saw me, and it was too much. He had to pull in too.
I wonder how many others were reduced to helpless inactivity that particular morning, by one wee lassie's words.
