These symbols used here are part of the Ogham alphabet.
Read from bottom to top, the symbols were most often etched onto sticks or
stone, and as far as most historians have been able to determine were mostly
used to mark important places. Typically, they reflect the names of the
departed or crossroads.

Each symbol (25 in all) are asscociated with trees or special
plants and the cycle of the year. And excellent reference to learn more is The

Although the ancients apparently never used the symbols as
runes or in divination, a modern interpretations has been given to them in the
Celtic Tree Oracle, reflecting the 2000 year old Druidic wisdom behind their
symbolism
