It is breezy yet still warm as the sun begins to set, and General Agrafiotis and I make our way to Phaistos. The conversation is light and pleasant, full of generalities for now. From time to time our eyes meet. Mari was correct. This man is extraordinarily handsome and intelligent. I am looking forward to getting to know him better.

During a lull in the conversation, my mind wanders to another who has never been far from my thoughts. Titian is due to arrive. He may already even be here. I have not seen him for two years, since he left Athens for his homeland, just before I had decided it was time to return to Crete. How will we feel when we once again set eyes on each other? Will we simply pick up where we left our relationship off? Would that even be possible? Or have circumstances changed? I simply cannot know until I see him.

Pushing these thoughts aside for now, I let out an audible sigh and hope the General doesn’t take note of my momentary discomfort. I would not want him to think that it is because of him. I am truly enjoying his company, and even though we have just met, I already like him.
We soon arrive at the palace, and the guards allow us to enter.

“I am curious as to why you do not make your home at Knossos, my Lady,” the General asks as I lead him to the guest quarters.

“The palace is still under reconstruction. I did make my home there for a time with my husband, the King of Crete, prior to the devastating earthquakes that rocked our island here. The children and I were sent to Athens, and to this day, we do not know what became of my King.”

*The palace guard bows to his Queen as we walk inside the palace. All this reminds me of the last time my King and I walked through the gates of my hometown in Argos towards the Palace of the Oldest city in Greece! My Anax and I were saluted and cheered as we moved towards the palace! now its all but a memory. I wonder what has happened back home since I've been gone.*

I put away these thoughts and turn to this beautiful woman next to me and say,"My lady, you seem troubled, is it because of the Journey?".

*Her look gives her away! the reason of her being troubled is not this trip*

"What ever puts your heart and mind in pain i will be here for you, nothing is worse than being in that kind of pain by yourself!"

General Agrafiotis catches me off guard with his words. He is very observant and has noted the brief moment of my discomposure after all. I am unsure how to respond at first, so I look at him with a soft smile. I do not doubt his words are sincere, since he has known great obstacles in his own life, judging by his recent story.

"You are very kind, General," I say, finally untying my tongue. "But do not fear for me at this moment. I am well. I do hope you will find your rooms suitable and comfortable," I say, changing the subject.

A servant opens the doors to one of the larger guest suites and shows us in. Just after we pass through the doors, a messenger raps lightly on one and asks permission to enter too. He bows as I bid him to come in.

"My Lady, the Prince and Princess have safely arrived home. They await you in your library," the messenger informs me.

"This is wonderful news! Thank you!" He bows again and leaves. I cannot suppress my joy upon receiving these words. I turn to the General, "It would be my honor and pleasure to introduce you to my children. Would you care to join me in greeting them now, or would you rather take some rest then join us at dinnertime?"

"thank you my lady, your invitation gives me great honor, but I think i'll rest for awhile, I will meet you and the royal twins later;."

* Her face is shining and her voice is filled with joy*

she looks at me and says "As you wish, until later then"

*It would be a mistake for my part to meet the royal twins now. After all it is their mother that the're eager to see.
My discretion has always worked for the best in the past and will continue to do so. As for the Queen her self she looks like she has a lot to do until we meet later.*

*I look out from the window to the open field that stretches behind the palace of Phaistos and it reminds me of the view back home. Further on the horizon i can see the sea as it meets the Cretan soil.*

*The past two years I have seen, places and people that very few other ,have the chance to see, but I haven't felt the joy of reuniting with my family; and now that I think about it, that must be one of the best things life can offer.*

* I think i'll rest my body and thoughts for awhile, after all I'm just a common man now, trying to find a place to find some peace and call...Home*

Taking my leave from the General, I head to the library in my own quarters of the palace. I stop at the doorway, seeing Darius and Ranae standing there waiting to greet me. They turn to see me and we all move towards each other. Oh, how they have grown just in the short time they were away!

"I am so glad you are both home!" I tell them, hugging them each tightly in turn.

"We are glad to be home, Mama," Darius says with feeling.

"And both of you arriving at the same time. However did you manage it?" I ask.

I see a look pass between them, making me wonder what they have been up to. But I am not concerned about it for now.

"When I got your message, I sent word to Darius to come meet me so we could travel home together. Oh, and you will never guess who escorted us!" Ranae says excitedly.

"Since I didn't send anyone for you, I'm glad the two of you travelled together. But who ended up escorting you?"

"Prince Titian himself!" she says with a huge smile.

"That's wonderful! So he is here now too?"

"Yes. He is spending some time with Talis getting caught up with her," Darius answers.

"Then I shall see him in good time, I suppose. He needs to spend time with his sister. She has missed him."

"And what about you, Mama? Have you missed him?" Ranae asks, not quite innocently.

"Of course I have. Now why don't you two run along and get settled and cleaned up for dinner. We have some marvelous guests joining us this evening. One in particular, I am anxious for you both to meet."

"Sounds intriguing. Come on Ranae. We better prepare ourselves!"

Darius offers his arm to his sister, and they head to their rooms. I extremely relieved and happy that they are home with me now

(Lord Titian arrives in phaistos palace)

"Would you like me to show you to your room, or would you care to see Lady Louisa first?" my sister asks.

"Since I'm sure she has heard of my arrival by now, I think I had best greet her. Please show me the way."

Talis takes me to Louisa's suite of rooms in the palace. She asks the guard at the door if the Lady is there, and if we may enter. He tells us that she is in her library. Talis shows me where it is, but then says she must leave to tend to some duties.

"Thank you, Talis."

"Good luck, Brother."

The door is open. Louisa stands near a window looking out at the view towards the sea. She is a vision herself, more beautiful even than I remember. When I tap lightly on the open door, she turns and smiles.

I take a few steps into the room, stop, then bow deeply.

"Lord Titian, you are a most welcome sight. How have you been?"

"I have been quite well, Lady, thank you."

"Thank you for bringing my children home safely to me."

"It was my pleasure."

There is an ackward silence. I move towards her and boldly put my arms around her.

"Oh, Titian, I have missed you," she says, returning my embrace.

"And I you, but," I pause, gently releasing her. "I have some news I want...that I must share with you."

*I had a nice rest but now it is time for me to join the Queen and her guests for dinner.*

*I walk to the window and take a deep breath of the fresh air that comes through it. My mind is traveling back and forth! I'm finding it hard to focus on the moment and the Queen's face keeps appearing in front of me out of thin air!*

*There was one other time in my life i had the same problem, it was when I met my long lost wife for the first time!, but I was just a teenager then ,just out of the academy and it was natural for a boy of that age to feel like that for a beautiful girl like my wife was, I fell in love with her a long before we got married.*

*I opened the door and started my way down to meet the rest of the guests but the thoughts will not leave me!*

*The guard is going incide to announce me to the queen but as he opens the door I see a Man holding in his arms the Queen!*

*Before the guard returns, i have to leave and come back later, it's a private moment and I...*

The general quicly goes out to the lower ground patio, he stops and looks to the sky above...

*How can this be!, Me the General of The army of Argos!!!...Am I jealus of what i saw in there? of that man?...but why? This woman,I...I just met her, I couldn't possibly feel... something more for her! could I?*

The questions linger in the back of his head as he walkes back inside.

With his drawing back and those few words, I get the sense my life is about to be altered somehow. Titian is quiet for a few moments, as if he is gathering his thoughts and courage. By the gods he is so handsome, but I see that whatever it is he has to tell me, he is troubled by it.

A shadow appears beyond Titian’s shoulder. I glance up in time to see General Agrafiotis in the doorway with a puzzling look on his face. But before I can respond he turns and is gone again. What must be going through the General’s mind after seeing me here with Titian? And why am I worried about it all of a sudden? I’ve only just met him, yet the impression he must have just gotten bothers me. My mind is so caught up in these thoughts that I do not hear what Titian is saying at first. But I do catch the last word of his sentence.

“…married.”

“Married?” I am stunned, naturally, and instantly brought back to the moment, here, with Titian.

“Yes, Louisa, I got married a year ago, while I was home,” Titian says.

I turn away from him for a moment to gather myself. We will not be renewing our relationship. He belongs to another woman now and is beyond my reach.

“Louisa, I am sorry. I know you had hoped, as I had hoped for a time too, that we could be together again. The marriage was arranged by my parents before their death, and I was honor bound to accept the arrangement.”

I take a deep breath and turn back to face him. Now is not the time to delve into the particulars regarding his new wife. Perhaps later, I will be able to ask him about her.

“Titian, you owe me no apologies or explanations. It is a fact of life that I must accept, that is all. I offer my sincere congratulations to you and I hope you are, and always will be, happy,” I tell him, fiercely fighting back tears. I will not cry now in front of Titian, no matter how much we have shared in the past.

“Louisa, I…” he begins, looking somewhat defeated. “Thank you. I don’t know what else to say.”

My voice quivers some as I tell him quietly, “You need not say anything. I will always cherish the time we shared together. It is I who should thank you. You helped me through a very difficult period in my life, and I appreciate all you have done for my family and me. Now if you will excuse me, I must prepare to greet my dinner guests, which I do hope you will be among?”

“Yes, as my Lady wishes.” He bows and quickly leaves the room.

“Well, that is that,” I say to myself.

I allow myself only a deep sigh of regret of what now, can never be. I admit feeling a sense of loss, but I must move forward. Living in the past never serves for a prosperous future.

“My Queen, it is time,” Talis pops her head in the door letting me know that the dinner guests are all gathered. “Are you all right?”

“Yes, Talis, I am okay. Lead on.”

I know she has noted my distress, but she also knows the reason behind it without even asking. She wisely leaves the subject alone as we walk towards the great hall. Somehow I manage to calm my racing mind and heart by the time we reach it. The guard announces my presence.

“The Lady of the Islands.”

Titian is the first person I see. I smile at him to let him know I am okay. He smiles softly, but a little sadly, back. Knowing he harbors some regret as well is enough for me. He truly loved me as I did him. But that time is now past, and we must redefine what our relationship will now be, if we are to have any at all. I move on to greet my children and a couple of other palace authorities who have joined the party.

“Talis, where is General Agrafiotis?”

“He is over there, my Lady,” she says, lifting her hand to indicate he is on the other side of the room, away from all the others, looking out the window. He looks very regal standing there, but on his face is an expression of seriousness I have not seen before.

“Darius, Ranae, follow me. There is someone I would like you to meet.” My children join me and we go over to him.

“Good evening, General Agrafiotis. I am glad you could join us. I would like to present to you my children, Darius and Ranae, Prince and Princess of Crete.”

How my mother does it, I will never know. I am constantly amazed by her strength of will.

Talis spoke to us before dinner. She told us that Lord Titian was married and that the news may upset Mama. Though Darius and I both understand the situation, I must admit I am disappointed. My mother and Titian made a stunning couple, even if he is ten years younger than she is. Talis reassured us that Titian would always care for all three of us, but that soon he would have a family of his own to care for. I hope he won't forget about us.

My brother and I made our way to the dinning area and were waiting in silence as everyone gathered. I looked around the room to see who all was joining us tonight. It seemed to be the usual crowd of important people, advisors and the like. A tall, dark man, that I don't recognize, entered the room and immediately distanced himself from the rest of us. Titian came in soon after. He said hello to Darius and me, but then also went and stood by himself, just to one side of the door to the room. I was beginning to feel that it would be a long, almost somber evening.

I was noting the absence of Lady Mari, when the guard opened the door and announced our mother's arrival. We bowed along with everyone else. I watched as Mama began greeting the guests, smiling at Titian as if nothing was wrong. But I could see it in her eyes and in Lord Titian's. Things were different. I wished it weren't so. I was too young to really remember when our father disappeared, but I imagine it must also have been a very painful time for Mama.

And, here she is now, once again going forward with her duties with the strength and dignity she always exudes. I hope she can hold it together. Somehow she always manages to. She has called Darius and I over to introduce us to the strange man by the window. As she presents us to the General, Darius bows and I curtsy showing the proper respect that his rank demands.

All the important people are gathered here tonight, but my thoughts are elsewhere. As I enter the dinner hall I see only strangers; and the lady of the isles is nowhere to be seen.

I never liked these royal dinners, although I have been in hundreds of them because of my rank. I allways liked being amongst my fellow soldiers and townsfolk because things with them were simple. No pretence and no masks to put on!.

I walk practicly unseen towards the window and decide to stay there until the lady comes.

After a few minutes of waiting here by the window the guard anounces the lady's arrival. I decide not to turn arround and show how happy I am to see her. From what i witnessed before it seems her heart belongs to another man, infact he is standing right there on the other side of the room.

The lady walks in and talks with her children, they're coming towards me.

She smiles and introduces them to me.

"It is an honor to meet you, prince Darius and princess Ranae!"

The prince is a strong and handsome young man that any General would like to have him fighting next to him, and princess Ranae is as beautful as her mother and has the same intence look in her eyes.

"My prince, I would fight next to you anytime!, and my princess, I will be your protector as I have vowed to be for your mother."

This dinner seems promicing after all.

The General seems pleased to be introduced to Darius and Ranae. He is most gracious to them, and to me. As the twins wander away to mingle with some of the other dinner guests, it suddenly occurs to me that perhaps I should say something to the General about the earlier encounter he witnessed. I feel the color rising in my cheeks but I look boldly into his eyes. I speak quietly, as this is not something to be shared with the entire room.

“General, I wish to speak to you about what you witnessed earlier between myself and the gentleman over there,” I indicate Lord Titian.

Before I can get any further, the serving of dinner is announced. I shrug slightly and let out a small sigh.

“Shall we then?” I ask.

The General offers me his arm and escorts me to the head of the table. I indicate to him that he is to take the seat to my left as he is my guest of honor for the evening. The other guests are shown to their places. Titian is seated to my right, which is a bit awkward, but things were planned this way prior to my discussion with him. Talis is seated next to her brother, then my daughter, Ranae. Lady Mari is supposed to be seated next to General Agrafiotis, but she has yet to arrive. I wonder what is keeping her?

“Has anyone had word from Lady Mari?” I ask the entire group.

The guard at the door speaks. “A message just arrived that she has been delayed at Kommos with Captain Nikias and she most likely will not make it back before the end of dinner.”

“Ah, thank you!”

“Mother, may I take Lady Mari’s place next to the General?” Darius asks.

“Yes, you may, if General Agrafiotis does not mind.”

I smile softly at the General and he motions for Darius to sit next to him, his eyes leaving mine for only that brief moment. The rest of the dinner guests are seated and the servants begin bringing in the wine and food. I realize that I must introduce General Agrafiotis to Lord Titian, for they have not yet met.

“General Agrafiotis, I would like you to meet a dear friend of mine and Talis’ brother, Lord Titian.”

There is nothing like being caught in a position between the man who held my heart up until he released it less than an hour ago, and another man who I admit I am becoming attracted to more and more each time we meet.

Our meeting had gone as well as could be expected. I knew Louisa would understand. Still, it was difficult. I know she is hurting. Only a person who has been close to her would note it. Watching her move about the room, I wish things had turned out differently. I will always love her. But more importantly, I respect her. I must let her go. I have vowed to myself, however, to keep a protective eye on her and her children.

Louisa now introduces me to the man sitting directly across from me. He appears to be a man of great rank and experience, a commander of men.

"General, it is a pleasure to meet you. Welcome to Crete. Do you plan to stay long on the island?"

"Greetings lord Titian! the pleasure is all mine. I Have reached the Island of Crete after two years of travelling. It seems the bond with my former life has been broken by fate it self! and now a new bond is being created; here in this hospitable island with its friendly and honorable people..."
I look at the Queen and she smiles "As for my stay here... the future is always in motion, so far it has been the closest thing to home for me; and a man without a home is like the clouds without the sky, a wondering nomad a person of great misfortune."

*Lord Titian is a fine man, I hate the fact that a few moments ago i carried jealusy in my heart for this man.
He looks noble and strong. My experience in life has shown me that we should never judge a person from the first look or the first action we see him doing*

I reach my cup of wine and raze it, " I would like to thank the Queen for inviting me here tonight, amongst all of you fine people and giving me the chance to feel so welcome. It is an honor to meet you all. If my Anax Diomedes of Argos;was here, he would feel proud and joy for being amongst all of you. I salute you!"

*The Lady of the isles said that she wants to speak to me about what i saw before, but I'don't think it is my business to know the details of the Queens life, Lord Titian is a fine man and if he holds her heart it is allright for me.*

*I bend closer to the Queen and whisper " My lady, there is no need for any explaining, your business with Lord Titian is of no concern of mine.I'm sorry that I nearly interapted your meeting with the man you Love..."

*she looks at me with confusion as I gently seat back on my chair*

*I think ,saying this to the Queen was one of the hardest things I've ever done*
