BUSH WARBLERS: THE FIRST BURST OF SONG

Amid the plum blossoms
I hear the first burst of song
too young yet to give a
full-throated performance
still, what a joy!

Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875)

A note in John Stevens' translation of Rengetsu's poetry ("Lotus Moon," Weatherhill, 1994) says: "In Japanese art and poetry, bush-warblers (uguisu) are always paired with plum blossoms. The plum tree, the first plant to flower in the spring, is a symbol of endurance and renewal; the bush warbler, a tiny bird of great beauty, breaks into song at the coming of the new season. (The bird's cry sounds like 'hokke-kyo" the Japanese for 'Lotus Sutra')."
