| Indis, a Vanyar between the Noldor
Indis, of the Vanyar the golden haired, second wife of Finwë, was the stepmother of Fëanor, maker of the Silmarils. They never got well along together as Fëanor considered this second marriage an attack on his mother Míriel, the first Elf to die in Valinor. According to the Law of Mandos, the soul-keeper, married souls that fared to his Halls, could return or be reborn into life again if their spouse did not remarry. Finwë's second marriage to Indis took away the opportunity to Míriel to return and live with her son Fëanor again. Marriage was sacred and forever and therefore Míriel had to remain in Mandos' Halls (Hades) until the end of Arda.
Indis gave Finwë two sons who later became Kings of the Noldor in Valinor and in Middle Earth. The Noldor were known as wise, of great knowledge and you could distinguish them by their dark hair. Nonetheless because of Indis, the decendants of her younger son Finarfin, like Galadriel, inherited the fair hair of the Vanyar.
Fëanor, the best craftsman of the Noldor and therefore of the Eldar, made the most beautiful jewels because in them they had the light of the Two Trees. When Melkor destroyed those trees and Ungoliant sucked all life-strenght out of them, the Valar asked Fëanor to give them the Silmarils. He declined this request. But he could not save them from Melkor's will and he lost them forever.
In pursuit of these jewels, Fëanor left the Blessed Realm hunting Morgoth until his death. Many of the Noldor followed him, being deceived by the Dark Lord. In pursuit of ships they commited the Kinslaying of the Teleri, the shipmakers. Because of this murder many of the Noldor died in Middle Earth; they were cursed by the gods after the Kinslaying and their rebellious act.
Noldor elves like Galadriel (granddaughter of Indis) passed over to Middle Earth in search of greater knowledge and power. And she had to remain here until the dark forces were conquered and thrown out of Arda. She was the only High Noldo to escape the curse of the Valar and to stay in Middle Earth after the War of Wraths.
