In 1206, the Mongol leader, Temujin, took the new name for his Mongolian people, who had exploded west and south out of the high Steppes of Asia and conquered to the banks of the Danube in Europe. He called himself "Genghis Khan." His dynasty ruled China for centuries, conquered Russia in 1251, and became a by-word for terror, conquest and (later) culture.
