The game Imperium takes place in Republican Era Rome.
The first Game Turn was January, 200 BC, just a year after the Romans under Scipio Africanus defeated the Carthaginians under Hannibal and ended the sixteen-year-long Second Punic War.
Each Game Turn covers one month of time in the virtual world of Imperium.
Newer players should understand that when they join Imperium, they are joining a game in progress and that it is a long running game. It will take time for newer players to become strong in comparison to older players, and it may take those older players sliding into their later, less productive years before newer players rise to power. Such is the nature of Imperium, it is a game of years, not weeks and months.
If you are interested in joining Imperium you may apply for membership at this site.

HOW TO GET STARTED PLAYING IMPERIUM: THE GAME OF ROME©
STEP 1: READ THE RULES©.
I. Imperium is basically a role-playing game. Your Player Character (PC) can do pretty much what could've been done in the real world of Republican Rome, subject to the attached rules© and the rulings of the UMPIRE.
II. The written rules have been created to help you understand what your PC may and may not do in the game and to give you a common frame-of-reference with other players. The rules outline the structure of Imperium's virtual world, lay out the game's administrative procedures, and detail how to participate in the game's more organized activities.
III. While you do NOT have to memorize all of Imperium's rules to play and enjoy the game, you should go through them at least once before you create your PC to get an overall idea of what's possible. You should also MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE ADMINISTRATIVE STUFF: how to communicate with the Umpire and other players, how to create a PC, and where to post your messages.
STEP 2: CREATE YOUR PC.
Send the following information to the player legatus by E-MAIL
I. Select a scenario from this list of Scenarios©
II. The name of your Player Character. Roman names are organized as: Prenomen - Nomen - Cognomen. Your PC must be a Roman Male.
III. Your PC's marital status (where applicable) and any children listed in your scenario.
IV. The e-mail address to which you want the Umpire and other players to send your private messages.
Your scenario will come with pre-chosen estates and/or factories as appropriate. Locations currently available as estate sites are shown in the Imperium Maps and Imperium Images©; their location values, and the cost to purchase a one square mile estate is 400 D multiplied by the Location Value. Each estate, regardless of location value, requires 30 slave laborers who must be purchased separately at the current market price. Factories do not require additional laborers.
V. Please include a short paragraph telling us who you are and indicating why you wish to join Imperivm.
That's all you have to do to get started. Good luck on your climb to the top!
