TURTLE NATIONS

Historical discussions of the many pre-European cultures, tribes and nations of North America, conducted in a spirit of respect.

Before Columbus, the Western hemisphere was a densely populated land. A land with its own peoples and ways of life, as varied and diverse as any of the other lands in the world.

The First Peoples inhabited every region of the Americas, living within the diversity of the land and developing cultural lifeways dependent on the land.

The hundreds of different nations can be categorized by the language groups they spoke (as we have chosen to do here) which evoke commonality of ancestry, or by the various geographical regions they lived in, which affect lifeways and trade, also covered within this group.

The commonality of cultures within these regions is a natural development of people building life-ways dependent on the land. In this group we will explore the nature of societies and spiritual thought, the art and artifacts, the history and trade between tribes. The history of the First Nations must always be analyzed critically; those who tell us that history are rarely ever of the Indigenous peoples. It is not our goal to speak in generalizations, since each culture had its own richness of existence, and since, ultimately, such generalizations do disservice to those whose heritage we respectfully wish to learn about.

Our group also explores the expanding knowledge of the earliest prehistory of mankind's coming and migrations through the Americas.

Please be welcome; our goal is to see the Native world with eyes attuned and open.
