During the Spring and Autumn period of the Zhou dynasty (770-476 BC), which is sometimes called the Chun Qiu period after a classic Confucian text, a government official, Feng Jian Zi, was rewarded for his service with a fiefdom in what is today's Henan province. The land became known as Feng, after its overlord.

The Jin kingdom later besieged this territory and upon their victory, awarded it to one of their own, Wei Zhang Qing, who adopted the land's name as his own. Thus there are two main branches of the Feng surname.

The Chinese characters for Feng depict a galloping horse. Variations include Fung (Cantonese), Fong, Pang, Feng-Rao (an obsolete term for a slave or underling) and Foong. In Vietnam, it is Phung.
