Peribsen, originally named Sekhemib, reigned during the 2nd Dynasty. Due to discrepancies in the Kings lists dating from that era, there remains some debate as to who preceded, and who followed him.
Sekhemib's reign pointed up the uneasy alliance between Upper and Lower Egypt. As religious affairs were so often to influence political life in ancient Egypt, and vice versa, Sekhemib discarded his Horus name for a Set name, Peribsen. The deities Horus and Set have long figured antagonistically in ancient Egyptian religious culture and mythology. Peribsen is the only ruler to make exclusive use of a Set name, although Khasekhemwy, who followed Peribsen (perhaps immediately) chose to honor both factions on his serekh.
