Also known as Hvakhshathra, Cyaxares was one of the most capable kings of Media (Iran). He reorganized the Median Army, then joined his forces with those of King Naboplashar of Babylon (Iraq). The alliance between these two powerful kings was formalized when Cyaxares's daughter, Amytis, married Naboplashar son, Nebuchadnezzar II - the king who constructed the Hanging Gardens as a present for his homesick, Median wife.

Cyraxares and Naboplashar overthrew the Assyrian Empire and destroyed Nineveh in 612 BC. After the Assyrian Empire, the Medes went on to conquer the rest of Northern Mesopotamia, Armenia and parts of Asia Minor, east of te Halys River.
