Who knew?
( * Antonia Marius - Jan 4, 2010 - 17:38 )
It was so much fun! Thanks for all the entertainment this past year. I am totally surprised! Congratulations to the others who played and for the two Fabius boys ... baci! You guys are great!
Congratulations and thanks...
( * Senex Caecilius - Jan 4, 2010 - 13:05 )
Congratulations go to the other winners and contestants, and thanks go to M. Fabius Furius and Mauricius Fabius for creating a novel and challenging contest.

Third place : Vipsania Augustus A round of applause for all three ! Thanks to all of you who participated, even if you didn’t sign up.
Pun and Whimsy
( * Titus Sabinus Flavius - Jan 2, 2010 - 21:39 )
These two examples won’t help with the contest – neither count as reference titles. They will, however, subtract two titles from consideration and show some of the humor thrown into the posts for fun.
A Grim Old Day in Monoacus is a pun. A Consultation of Senators was my attempt to create one of those strange Victorian collective plurals.
Nice try
( * Titus Sabinus Flavius - Jan 2, 2010 - 19:43 )
Salve, Antonia!
That format is fine for your answers and quite complete. Whether that one is correct or not (either in the YFE title or the reference) is yet to be revealed. Good luck! In case anyone is wondering, all contestants have been notified they may submit or resubmit answers until 12:00 AW time tomorrow.
So, something like
( * Antonia Marius - Jan 2, 2010 - 19:35 )
"Immolation of the Gods" (* M. Fabius Furius, Dec 19, 2009 - 14:27 ), variation of "Cufflinks of the Gods" Saturday Night Live First aired: 10/2/1976, would work? *L*
Antonia
( * Mauricius Fabius - Dec 29, 2009 - 10:19 )
The titles referred to are well-known, but that always depends on one's background. What is popular in the film world may not be so popular in the quantum physics world !
Good luck to all contestants, you still have three days to make your list and reply !
I will take the challenge
( * Antonia Marius - Dec 27, 2009 - 11:37 )
Pray Juno I have time before December 31st. These are popular titles, right? I am intrigued.
Still Time to Enter
( * Titus Sabinus Flavius - Dec 26, 2009 - 12:55 )
As far as I know, no one has come up with all the correct "reference" titles yet. So keep searching!
There's just under a week left, but that's still time for new contestants to sign up to try for the top prize!
CONTEST DESCRIPTION AND RULES: The Imperial Titles Challenge For the past year, “The Year of Four Emperors Project” has attempted to recreate the events of the Roman civil wars of 69 A.D. on corresponding dates. The project will draw to a close on New Year’s Day, 2010. To celebrate the conclusion of the Year of Four Emperors at AncientWorlds, we’re having a contest! ![]() Among the more than 700 post titles in the YFE thread, there are at least 40 that make specific reference to other works of art, music, literature, or film. The contest is simple: to win, you have to be the first to identify the most of these “reference” posts in the least amount of time. References are spread evenly across four broad categories:
A) Movies and Performing Arts Some references in the post titles are incidental; others are strongly related to the content of the post. Some titles are taken directly from another work; others are variations on titles or involve a play on words. Note: most titles are in English, regardless of the language of the original artist or creator, so look for a few translations. However, there are a few titles in their original language of creation. Here are a couple of examples: - Verania’s Lament (posted on Jan. 15, 2009). Reference – variation of a musical composition, “Ingrid’s Lament,” part of Edvard Grieg’s Pier Gynt Suite. - A Day at the Games (posted on June 2, 2009). Reference – variation of the movie title of the Marx Brothers’ A Day at the Races or A Day at the Circus.
Rules: Participation is open to anyone (including Scribes!). You must identify as many reference titles in the YFE thread as possible. You must also provide the name of the correct original work of art. (The examples above cannot be submitted among your answers.) You do not have to list answers in the four categories (some titles fall into more than one), but the categories may help organize your answers. This contest concerns all posts made in the Year of the Four Emperors (YFE) thread by the end of the 19th of December 2009. The YFE thread is here. You must sign up to be considered a contestant. Answers provided by persons who have not signed up will be ineligible for prize money. Send entries to mauriciusinroma“at”aol/dot/fr (substituting @ for “at” and period for "/dot/"). Only one submission per member will be accepted, i.e. entries in the guises of multiple personae will not be recognized. Entries will be compared to a pre-determined list of correct reference titles (the list excludes commonplace or generic phrases that may coincidentally be a title to some other work). First prize goes to the first entry with all (or the most) correct titles. Second place goes to the most correct titles submitted in the next shortest amount of time and so on for third place. Contest begins Dec. 18, 2009. All entries must be submitted by 18:00 AW time on Dec. 31, 2009. Winners will be announced on Jan. 1 or 2, 2010. First prize is fixed at 1500 sestertii, second prize at 1000, third prize at 500. Plaques will be awarded to all participants. |
