Writer'
s Challenge For all those who long to explore the realms of myth
and legend, harken! The group Alternative Realms
and Writing is sponsoring a Writing Challenge. The deadline is October
20th. national writers day.
CONTEST DESCRIPTION AND RULES: Open to Everyone! Your entry should be a work of fiction, but beyond that you are free to write whatever you want. So let your imagination rule, and have fun! Length is not as important as quality, but we anticipate anything from short-shorts of 250 words or less to longer stories of 1,000-1,500 words or so. When you deem your story ready, post it at the Writing Challenge 2009 thread in Hellas. To get a taste for the kind of style you might want to use, read some myths, fables, or folktales at one of our links or elsewhere. Here are some suggestions. 1) Show and don’t tell. Instead of saying, “It was a beautiful mermaid,” make us experience her by painting her with the 5 senses: her wild song, her glittering scales and long strands of hair wildly blowing in the salt-scented spray, etc. 2) Tell one dramatic incident with a beginning, middle, and end. 3) Have a main idea or theme in mind (romantic love, evil temptress, etc.). 4) Include some dialogue. 5) Give a sense of the characters’ personalities and quirks as people. In a very short story, one dominant trait and perhaps one minor trait are enough. Support these traits with brief descriptive tags (i.e., weathered and callous brown hands). 6) Sketch in the setting with a few concrete details. In a short story, fable, or myth you can’t digress; every word and image should support the main purpose. Good luck! We look forward to reading your writing. |
