Alexandria Museum

PURPOSE: Think of the Alexandria Library as akin to the card catalog system of your own local public library. Think ease of use as a reference tool.

CHIEF LIBRARIANS: Chief Librarians take on the task of overseeing specific Boards, or Sections (currently, Anatomy through Policies). They are able to start new threads on their Sections. Please check to see how other Sections have set up their threads. Librarians should check their Sections to make sure posters are using the topics as intended.

Section (Board) Setup:
Boards should have:
A DESK topic thread for that board. Desks are where members can come and ask questions about anything concerning that topic, ie, "Where can I find information about how Ancient Egyptians set bones?" Librarians or others with expertise can answer this here.
The Desk is also a place where one can insert an informative review of a book. Please link back to the Reference in the Bibliography.
One or more BIBLIOGRAPHY topics.
One or more corresponding WEBLINK topics.
Chief Librarians are welcome to create graphics for their section, as they choose.

ALL MEMBERS: People posting in the Library should remember our guidelines are for ease and consistency of reference use.
Keeping this in mind, all are welcome to post.

BIBLIOGRAPHY FORMAT:
Preferred format for posting in Bibliography topic threads:
One reference per post. (Like a "real" library cataloging system)
Title of book or magazine/journal article as subject title. At your discretion, you may also include the author name.
Content of the post should include, for books, the following:
Authors, book title, publishing date, publishing info (pubbed by whom, ISBN number if available).
If possible or applicable, include Table of Contents.
Any commentary you make should be brief.

Example, Book:

Message: Egyptian Medicine, by Carole Reeves
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Author: * Avram Sithathor - 37 Posts
Date: Dec 14, 2002 - 16:08
Egyptian Medicine. Carole Reeves, 1992. Shire Publications LTD. (in the Shire Egyptology series). ISBN 0-7478-0127-4. 72 pages.

This slim volume gives a very good overview of the state of Egyptian medicine.

Chapters include:

Health and hygiene.
The medical profession.
Diseases and deformities.
The medical papyri.
Drugs and the prescription.
Glossary of medical terms (not theirs, but those of today).

There is also a good bibliography.

Recommended.

Journal/Magazine Articles: Similar to the above, but include in your post content the name of the Journal in which the article appears, and the issue number and date.

WEBLINKS FORMAT
Preferred posting in Weblink topic threads:
One reference per post.
Title of Weblink as subject title. (Occasionally you will find you will need to give these good descriptive titles, but please attempt to go with the title the website gives.)
There's a lot of fluff on the web. Try to find websites either associated with academic, educational, or museum sources, although there are indeed some good amateurs out there who have done their homework for their sites. Some tourism sites are also a possibility.
Include in your post content the link back to the website. Add in the "target="_new" or "target="_blank" code, so that the link opens a new window (makes it easier for people to get back to Ancient Worlds.)
If the website is organized by a table of contents, you might wish to include this.

Example, Weblink:

Message: Medicine in Ancient Egypt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Author: * Hapshetsut Nebet - 465 Posts
Date: Jan 6, 2003 - 02:52
An interesting if relatively brief examination of three of the most important medical papyri - equipped with a good bibliography.

CROSSPOSTING: Occasionally you will be dealing with a resource that is equally applicable to two sections.
Place your reference on both, with a note at the bottom crosslinking to the other. (With a clickable link).
(Ie, "crosslinked/referenced with
Husbandry/Animals").
You might simply link into the proper section of that board rather than the specific post if you need to (since three minutes to jump over and edit on a dialup might not be practical).

THE MUSEUM:

If you have a particular image of Egyptian art, that is not on display in the Museum section, and you would like to see it displayed, please leave Feline Thutmose a message at the Desk of the Curator or at her home and she will get back to you for further information and arrangements.
The reasoning for this is that the art is displayed in a particular format, and she wishes to keep it all uniform.
The same thing applies to the Links Thread.
You will be given credit for your contributions in the posts.
