The last day of the PANATHENEAE was devoted to the chariot race of the APOBATES.

The Athenians belived that the chariot race had been introduced by the first king, Erechtheus, and may have recalled chariot warwafare of the Bronze Age. Each chariot was occupied by a driver and a warrior in full armour wgo had to jump down and re-board the chariot while it moved at speed. The Panathenic Way may have formed part of the circut, as chariots finished up by the Eleusinium, halfway up the hill to the Acropolis.
