From their sudden appearance in European history in 375 AD to the defeat of the sons of Attila in 453, the Huns had a brief but profound effect on Late Antique history. To this day they are a byword for ferocity and barbarism, but for a time they formed a powerful polyethic kingdom to the north-east of the Roman Empire which influenced many tribes and played a significant role in the politics of the last days of the Empire.
Through literature, operas and movies Attila the Hun remains a figure of folklore and he lived on as a major character in Germanic oral poetry as well, with stories ot "Atli" being recited as far away as Greenland centuries after his death and the dissolution of his people.
