DUN AUCHABHAICH
(Iona Hillfort)
Atop the highest point on the Isle of Iona sat a Celtic Hillfort by the name of Dun Auchbhaich. Little is known of the earliest residents, but it appears to have been first occupied during the late Bronze age. From this, one must presume the builders and inhabitants were Picts, most likely of the Cruithni Tribe or Clan.
Although there is no evidence to support the existance of a farming community on the island, it would have been too small an area to support any sizeable group of hunter/gatherers. Looking at the terrain, the valley below the hillfort, to the the south, would have been well-suited to agriculture. In spite of the fact that the topsoil is thin and scanty, crops could have been grown in the lower and more sheltered areas.
