While recent historians have placed more emphasis on the Vikings as traders, explorers and craftsmen, the fact remains that most of Europe came to know of the Vikings as raiders and pirates.

As heirs to a complex Germanic warrior society, the Viking Age people of Scandinavia maintained strong bonds between a warrior and his lord, with complex obligations binding ship's crews and warbands together. These traditons, along with the speed and versatility of their famous ships, made the fast moving and unpredictable Vikings ferocious and much feared enemies.
