Leaving office as Consul in early 58 BC, Caesar was given proconsular governance of both Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul - Gaul in northern Italy and the unconquered lands of Gaul beyond the Alps. In eight years in some of the most famous campaigns of antiquity, he conquered a vast new territory for Rome and rose to fame and unimagined wealth. But events in Rome ensured that, when he crossed the Rubicon in 49 B.C., Civil War would ensue. For discussion of all related events including the Gallic Wars, the death of Crassus, the alienation of Pompey, and the steps leading to war in Italy.
