Leaving office as Consul in early 58 BC, Caesar was given proconsular governance of both Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul - Gaul in northern Italy and the unconquered lands of Gaul beyond the Alps. In eight years in some of the most famous campaigns of antiquity, he conquered a vast new territory for Rome and rose to fame and unimagined wealth. But events in Rome ensured that, when he crossed the Rubicon in 49 B.C., Civil War would ensue.
