In ancient Rome, when you had a message for the public, you scratched it on a wall.

The curators of the Vespasianus Monument invite you leave a graffiti message about Vespasian and/or The Year of the Four Emperors as part of the festivities marking the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of this notable Roman.

Graffiti inscriptions have been found on the walls of ancient ruins, namely the Roman catacombs and Pompeii. It was not only the Greeks and Romans who produced graffiti; Viking graffiti survives in Rome and at Newgrange Mound in Ireland and a Varangian scratched his name (Halvdan) in runes on a banister in the Hagia Sophia at Constantinople. Throughout history graffiti were a form of communication to express opposition to social mores, heartbreak, popular beliefs, political propaganda and/or distaste for an enemy.

For Vespasian's birthday, become an epitoechograph (writer on the wall) and create an original graffiti using the "walls" below or you can use your own "wall." Be funny, political, historical, religious, whatever. Artsy or stick figures, words or symbols ~ give us something akin to the ancient graffiti seen on walls throughout Rome and Pompeii, as related to Vespasian and The Year of Four Emperors.
