Yuwangtai, or King Yu's Terrace, was originally named Guchui Tai, or the Music Terrace, in honor of Shi Kuang, a blind musician who gave concerts here during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). This park in the southeast section of Kaifeng was also the venue for poetry readings by Li Bai, Du Fu and Gao Shi during the Tang dynasty. King Yu of the Xia dynasty was one of the five legendary kings of China and was responsible for teaching his subjects flood control, something greatly to be desired in Kaifeng given its location in the floodplain of the Yellow River. A bronze statue of King Yu was erected here during the Ming dynasty, when Kaifeng was repeatedly flooded, along with a library named for him and several temples in his honor. This board is for discussion of literature and the arts during the Northern Song dynasty, when Kaifeng reached its pinnacle. |
