From the first movements of the Cimbri from Denmark to the pressure on Gaul from the Ubii and Treveri. This was the period of the first contacts between the Germanic peoples and the Mediterranean world. The Cimbri and their fellow migrants appeared in Gaul and came close to a successful invasion of Italy. A generation or so later, it was the Suebians under Ariovistus who were on the march, before their defeat by Julius Caesar. Then the tribes who began crossing the Rhine to expand into Gaul found the Roman Empire rapidly expanding in the opposite direction and, for a time, the migrations of the Germanics were halted.
