The Hungry Ghost Festival is observed in many countries of the Orient beginning on the thirteenth day of the seventh lunar month. It is on this day that the spirits of the dead who didn't behave themselves during their lifetimes are released from the afterlife, and take to wandering about in search of food and honor. Families set out food for these spirits, in part to placate them and to keep their evil influence at bay, and in hopes of bringing luck to themselves. This tradition has evolved somewhat differently in each culture which you can learn about through our articles.

Things to Do:

We will be holding our celebration of the Hungry Ghost Festival in conjunction with a houseboat party right here in the Grand Canal. All sorts of boats have moored here for the occasion, each of their captains offering something special for their honored guests. They await your visits!
