Valley Temples were buildings erected for the Cult of the deceased Kings. They were set a little ways off from the pyramid and intended as a vestibule of sorts, with a t-shaped entrance and connected with the pyramid by a long causeway. The were in use in the Old Kingdom, and in some places there are signs that actual embalming were performed here. They also held various chambers and halls for statues of the king and for the placing of offerings.

In later times, the so called Mansions of Millions of Years became popular and in use on the West Bank opposite modern Luxor.

From the early times, when the deceased were laid to rest in a shallow pit of sand, the funerary customs developed and changed to become elaborate and sophisticated to a degree that it will probably never lose its fascination for modern people. So religion was something you were enclosed in wether you thought about it or not. The Divine was everywhere and there was no means to avoid it - society was steeped in it. As long as you lived, the Divine influenced you. How to get along in life then, how did they do it, what did their everyday practice look like? Was there a great difference between men and women in that respect? Was there a great difference between the high and mighty and the simple farmer or fisherman? Let´s take a look!

It is often said that the Ancient Egyptians were obsessed with life after death. I´m not sure that is correct for when you look a their art and read their poetry there are other aspects of life extolled. But they did have rules for right living which have come down to us in the various "Books of the Afterlife" which were frequently spread in the New Kingdom.
