Numerous healing springs are to be found at Daphne, the suburb south of ancient Antioch. The famous spas and Sanctuary of Apollo are located here_ near the source of theses springs. Two Roman aqueducts carry water to the city. They are the Castalian to Antioch and the Pallas to Daphne. Here are still found the beautiful groves of oak, cypress and laurel. The waterfalls are fed by the springs.
Nothing is left at Harbiye of the ancient Daphne except the sylvan beauty of the place. It was a grand place of sumptuous luxury consecrated to the cult of Apollo.
The oracle of the Springs of Daphne, which provided replies to unanswerable questions, was covered over by orders of Hadrian. He wished to put an end to priests growing rich from selling interpretations of the oracles enigmatic replies. |
