Our tour begins in Attica, the heart of Hellas, the place where democracy was born. Attica is a triangular peninsula which stretches out into the Aegean Sea from the southeastern mainland of Greece. In ancient times, it was the territory ruled directly by Athens.
Our virtual Attica is divided into four cities: Athens, Eleusis, Marathon, and Piraeus. In December of 2004, it was named the best hood in Hellas. From the main page, you can view the Attica webring and learn a little more about some of the people who have built residences here.
Athens
Violet-crowned Athens, where democracy was born and home to many of the most important names in the history of ancient Greece. From the Athens page, you can take a virtual tour of the Agora or two different tours of the Acropolis. You can also view digital 3D models of the Parthenon sculptures. Athens currently consists of 5 districts: Acharnai, Alopeke, Daidalidai, Embassy Square, and Skambonidai.
Acharnai
The deme of Acharnai is home to farmers and artisans. The original was the largest and most populated of the Attic demes, situated some 60 stadia north of Athens at the foot of Mount Parnis. It appears to have been important as far back as the Bronze Age. There were two major temples, one to Ares and one to Athena Areia. Charcoal burners from Acharnai form the chorus of Aristophanes’ play The Acharnians. Lorelei Aristophanes, the Archon of Acharnai, maintains a small farm here. You can drop into her courtyard and say hello. Nitokris Baket also has her Oikia here, but she has not yet decorated. Aristomachos Pericles has built the Oikos Aristomachou Athinaiou.
Alopeke
The deme of Alopeke was located in the heart of Athens proper. It was home to Socrates. From here, you can follow several links to learn more about him. Scribus Emeritus Bacchus Isocrates has recently opened the Athens Real Estate Agency. It isn’t yet possible to sell your home, but drop by and see what he has to offer. Cybergod Jot Ariston has an oikos here. Helen Ariston maintains the Temple of Athena Nike. Many of the members of Delian Dreams have left gifts for the goddess here. Iulius Caesar Augustus also maintains his Domus Augusti Attici here. Eunice Orestes has built her oikidion The Perfumed Garden, a peaceful place for a hetaira and her friends. Drop by and read some of her stories and say hello.
Daidalidai
The deme of Daidalidai lies just north of Alopeke. It is named for the mythological inventor Daidalos (Daedalus) and is home to many craftsmen and artisans, especially carpenters. Scriba Emerita Louisa Agis maintains Louisa’s Megaron here. It is still under construction. Odin Knudsson has opened a vacation property Scriba Emerita Alerissa Nestor has an oikos here. She offers a few links to help you find a home in Hellas and decorate it. Scribus Emeritus Damon Harmodios also keeps his Studio Harmodios here. Hecate Agis has the mysterious Pit of witchcraft and lost souls. Here the souls of the dead walk and do not welcome outsiders. Come too close and she will claim your soul for Hades. Enter at your own risk. Clymene Charmides has begun to decorate her oikidion. Perhaps you can say hello. Dionis Agis has the small Temple of Joy and Sparkling Wine, a shrine to Bacchus. There you will find a dimensional portal to take you to his home. Aspasia Ictinus has built the House of the Courtesans here. Drop in and share a krater of wine.
Embassy Square
At the heart of Athens is Embassy Square, where the ambassadors of the other 7 worlds are available for messages and to provide information about their worlds. So far, the Americas Ambassador Sak Biyan ShieldJaguar and Consul General Acolnahuacatzin ShieldJaguar have created a very informative embassy. Also worth a visit is Philias Park, where the Friends of Hellas awards are held. You can also view the stele where the names of all the winners are inscribed. Sextus Manlius also maintains a small, but flashyoikidion here.
Skambonidai
The deme Skambonidai was a large and wealthy deme situated to the north of the Acropolis. Its most famous resident was Alcibiades, student of Socrates and prominent player in the Peloponnesian Wars. Scribe Kallistos Alexandros maintains a Palace of Prince Kallistos (one of many) here. You can view the interior of the palace or simply leave him a message. Demigoddess Heraklia Aelius has her Attica of Heraklia in Skambonidai. You can leave her a message here or ask her man Roscius to give you a tour of the house. Scribe Demetrios Xanthippos has a modest oikos where he dabbles in the Black Sea grain trade. You can leave a public message there or send a private message with his rather unreliable man Skylas. Scribe Kallistos Alexandros has opened offices for the group Quill and Parchment. Come here to learn more about the group and participate in any open contests they may hold. This is also where Aspasiana Aristophanes has her Hidden Home. It is currently still under construction. Beware of falling Grafix. (Perhaps that is her clumsy Gallic architect.) You can also find the Villa Godi Malinverni of Alexis Chabrias here. Semonetta Aristocratos has opened the Aphrodite Temple Gardens. Drop by and help her create a beautiful garden devoted to the goddess of love.
Eleusis
If you leave Athens by the Tripylon Gate and follow the Sacred Way to the northwest, you will come to Eleusis. It is an ancient town where the Mysteries of Demeter and Kore, better known as the Elusinian Mysteries, were held. While there, you can learn a bit more about the mysteries and visit some of the sacred monuments.
The Agora District
The Agora district of Eleusis is where power, religion, and politics meet. Priests, politicians, and anyone wishing to explore the interaction between the laws of men and the justice of the gods are particularly welcome here. Klymene Charmides has a small farm on the outskirts of town. Triptolemos Alexandros maintains the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore. Hekate Chabrias has an oikidion at the Crossroads. Kyria Hipocrates also has an oikidion, the Fields of Eleusis in Eleusis. She comes here to celebrate the Mysteries, but is usually to be found keeping the inn on Delos. If you like, she will guide you there to join the symposion. Khayman Aristocratos has built an Abode of Wisdom here.
Marathon
To the northeast of Athens lies the polis of Marathon, situated on the bay of the same name. This is where the Athenian General Miltiades led a small force of Athenian and Plataian hoplites and drove back a much larger force of Persians, bringing and end to Darius’ dream of conquering Greece. Here you can learn more about how the Greeks defeated the much larger force and also take a quiz.
The Agora District
The Agora district of Marathon is the home to a few sights. Balbas Scriptor has established an Architectural History Museum in his megaron here. As yet, only the guest register and suggestion box are open, but there is hope for some impressive exhibits in the future. Drop by and offer a few suggestions or just some encouragement. Chilly Pinguinus operates Marathon City Ice. He hopes to sell ice and ice products to all the athletes that congregate here. Stop by for a cherry snow cone or a refreshing Ice Capp. This is also the place to get your ice if you’re throwing a party; get one 10 pound bag for 2 strti or three for just 5 strti. Nikippe Ariston also has a small oikidion here.
Piraeus
If you leave Athens to the southwest and follow the road between the Long Walls, you will come to Piraeus, the harbor of Athens. Here you can learn a bit about the harbor and take a quiz.
The Agora District
The Agora district of Piraeus is home to several people as well as the site of some active role play involving the Delian League. Aikaterine Callias has a Sea Oikos. She isn’t in, but you can send a her message by fish. Lysippe Eurimedon also has a Seaside home. Meanwhile, Theseus Theocritos hosts the mainland base of the Delian League. Panos Pausanios hosts the Temple of Theseus for the Delian League. Speros Xanthippos operates Delos Imports Exports, an import warehouse for goods from Antioch and the Greco-Roman world. Two of the League’s ships make their port here in Piraeus: the Argos under Apollonis Ptolemy and the Aspasia under Chiara Cicero. In addition, Herkules Hippon has built the Shrine of Herkules to honor the Apollo and Athena of Piraeus. He has used his winnings from the Delian games as a sacrifice in honor of the Panathenaea. |
