Phenom Leonidas is a Hellene who needs no introduction. A longtime member whose site involvement has been pervasive and wide-reaching, his glowing appreciation for the AncientWorlds staff has prompted a number of spontaneous outbursts of support for them. (Okay, does that last bit count as this world's contribution to April Fool's Day?) In all seriousness, however, the efforts of this individual cannot be denied, nor should they be. One must only look at his beautiful work at Virtual Archaeology to begin to appreciate the passion with which he undertakes those things which are important to him. Recognition for Phenom's contributions to both Hellas and all AncientWorlds is long overdue, and thus he is "In the Spotlight" this spring.

Spring Blooms in Hellas
Philias Park in Athens Embassy Square witnessed a gala celebration, 25 March, for the first recepients of the Friends of Hellas honor: the Romans Heraklia Aelius, Senex Caecilius, Cornellia Cornelius, and the Mesopotamian Marduk Hammurabi. Their names are engraved into The Stele for as long as there is Hellas in the AncientWorlds. The ceremony concluded The Prometheia festivities in Hellas which featured numerous trivial challenges, a moveable feast tour, and widespread torch lightings across Hellas. In addition, the wedding of Eudora and Genuflex occurred during the festival, thanks to the efforts of Senex Caecilius. Congratulations are in order to Kallistos Alexandros for his initiation and leadership in bringing another successful event to Hellas. Indeed the perfect way to welcome spring to the Hellenic World.

Revamped: the Hellas Welcomers
Sparked by an interest in the Roman welcoming setup, the Vigiles, Hellas has adopted a new welcoming committee: the Astynomoi. The purpose was two-fold: 1) use an ancient Hellenic office to increase authenticity, and 2) to return to a welcoming committee which included non-scribal members. Beauty Solon was the first Astynomos and has been a great addition to the welcomers.

Athenian Agora Uncovered
Clymene Charmides graciously posted a link to an MSNBC article about the discovery of a marketplace ("agora") ruins in the Athenian neighborhood of Voula, dating back to the 4th to 5th century B.C.E. The find is believed to be part of the Aexonides Halai settlement located at the southern extent of ancient Athens.

"'300' is Western Propoganda"
The Iranian U.N. Mission announced its outrage of the recent blockbuster "300", which depicts the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.E. between Hellenic and Persian forces, for "deliberate distortions" of the Persian Empire is seen by some as an attempt to diminish the image of ancient Persia. Cambridge University professor Paul Cartledge, who acted as a consultant for the film, noted that "300" is not "a documentary of what actually happened at Thermopylae".
