On each table is a circular laquered tray divided into eight compartments - because the number eight connotes prosperty - all of which provide a sweet beginning to the New Year.

Artistically arranged in each section is one of the following symbolically sigificant snacks:

  • candied melon for growth and good health
  • lotus seeds for fertility
  • watermelon seeds for money
  • red melon seeds for joy, happiness, truth and sincerity
  • longnan for many good sons
  • coconut denotes unity
  • kumquat for gold or prosperity
  • lychee nuts for strong family relationships
  • peanuts for long life
