Descriptive facts about the abode of The High Priestess at Karnak, Nilaja Amenhotep.

Tucked away behind the Temple of Amun lies the home of the High Priestess, Nilaja Amenhotep. The Temple Lodgings are opulent compared to other quarters here due to her position and title but the themes are very plain in contrast.

Being of the Priesthood, Nilaja's lifestyle is modest and disciplined only taking that which is necessary and never exhibiting overindulgence of any kind. It leads one to believe that if more modest accomodations could be hers she would gladly take them.

There are depictions of the many religious festivals and rites adorning the walls of her inner sanctuary and pottery from the merchants in Waset where she serves as Nomarch. She is a paradox of contradiction.

In her dressing room there are many different ceremonial robes that she must adorn according to the festivities and/or ceremonies she must attend. There are also many different wigs that adorn her head, again according to the occasion. Incense burn in clay containers throughout the building and an array of plantings climb out of pottery throughout the various chambers.

There is an influx of maids and mesengers moving along the corriders at any given time, making sure that all of Nilaja's needs are met. And there is a special area where her lions are kept when they are not out in the heat of the courtyard. Hathor and Bador, her lions are very dear to her heart and playmates to her adopted son, Uadji, whom she had rescued when his parents were murdered. She had raised him well and he was coming soon into manhood. She never spoiled him but it was obvious that her love for him was monumental.

This was the place where she could come and just "be". This was the sanctuary inside the sanctuary, her home. These were the Lodgings of the High Priestess, Nilaja Amenhotep!
