It's hard to think I spent more than 45 years indifferent more or less to both Roman history and 'net communities, but my experience here is totally unexpected, given my earlier life! Now, it's a bit hard to imagine life without AncientWorlds (I tried it in 2002, without AncientSites, and decided it was not a Good Thing).I'm a corn-fed Missouri farm girl whose Oxford-educated English father made sure I'd traveled a lot in Europe before I was 20. With a degree in English literature (ha! all aging hippies in the '60's and '70's had such degrees), I;ve worked as a legal secretary and then a paralegal my life long. When I was 19, I was a nanny to a French family in Paris; at 21, I spent a year in London falling in love with English history. I'd always been a booky little nerd and, heaven knows, I should have been interested in the ancient world - but I wasn't. Then in the winter of '97, I bought my first CD-Rom game. It was entitled S.P.Q.R.: The Empire's Darkest Hour and, in looking for hints to how to play this (then, amazingly new) challenge, I found a small, deeply disturbed bunch hanging out at the SPQR-CD site over at Time Warner. That's where I first met Julilla, Livia, Senex, Barb, Skyros, Anticus, and so many more who are still around AW today. The rest, as they say, is our history on this site. I used to raise some virtual hades on site, but I had to be well behaved when I became a demi, and I've struggled to do so since 2002 ;) However, they DID make me the Party Demi, so I enjoy working on festivals each year with our various worlds. I had partied out to such an extent that, in 2008-9, I took a one-year sabbatical hiding in a cave on the backside of Mt Olympos. This was so boring that I came back in September, 2009. There really isn't anyplace like this anywhere. For several years, I ran web sites on ancient history directly attributable to what interests AW had spawned; I took them down 9/09 because, frankly, they'd done their part on the 'net and it was time to move on. But I've still got special soft spots for the Women of Ancient Rome; Julius Caesar; Augustus Caesar; and Alexander the Great. All of which I gained from hanging around with this lot and reading a simply astounding number of books! I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with two Sphynx Cats, three furry cats, and a very intimidated long-haired Chihuahua. I've wanted to be here since 1972, so in 2004, I finally made it! |
