The Villa Cubiculum
![]()
As everything in my villa is on one floor, I have the traditional master bedroom which is at the far end of the Peristyle Garden, opening up to the Portico which lines it. It was actually my father's - I would never have picked such a luxurious red by myself! But like most Roman bedrooms, it is fairly small - in this case, about VIII feet by XII feet, although the normal cubiculum can be much smaller - perhaps VI by VIII feet. But after all, we seldom use them for more than sleeping, living in the other rooms of the villa - and you only need room for a lamp, a chest, and a bed!

Here you will usually find my personal maid, Ahta. She was born in Alexandria and her father sold her when she was five years old! She has been with me a long time, and tends to my wardrobe, helps me with my hair, keeps my clothes and jewels in order, and lords it over all the other servants! She also is wise in herbs and healing and acts as unofficial physician for the entire household. ![]() Lamps courtesy of Frank Egan's magnificent metal recreations of ancient Mediterranean lamps. |
