I am that rarest of creatures, a second-generation native Southern Californian. However, I pulled up stakes ten years ago and moved first to Oregon and then to Germany. These days I live in a rural village on the outskirts of a national park. (You can read more about that here if you’re interested.)

I’ve been interested in history for as long as I can remember. When I was 9, I wanted to grow up to be an archaeologist, and when I was 10, I dressed up as one for Halloween. I don’t know if that came from the series of books we had where each volume was devoted to the myths and legends of a different culture* or because I basically read my way through the entire school library and a good chunk of the public library. Anyway, at various times, I could have been a member of almost any of our worlds. Greece just happened to be at the top of the list when I arrived here.

I hold a degree in applied mechanical engineering, but I’ve never actually used that. Just after I graduated from university, my family bought a Mac. I thought it was pretty amazing. My first programming course had involved punch cards. So I drifted into computers. These days, I’m a translator. Mostly technical stuff and computer games, but I’m also on the translation team for Brill’s New Pauly, a huge encyclopedia of ancient history.

Like so many others, I found AncientSites through the article in Archaeology. I came intending just to find out a couple of things I had questions about, fully expecting to go away again, but almost 10 years later, I’m still here. I tromped around and made a lot of newbie mistakes, made friends, watched the site grow and change, and then go dark. Thanks to a couple of sites Heraklia Aelius set up, I weathered the dark ages, and AncientWorlds went on-line just in time. I signed up during the beta and took up my patronage again as soon as I could. When I was approached about being a scribe, I said yes. It’s time to give something back to a community that has meant a lot to me over the years.

*I think they came from one of the major publishing houses. Each volume was a different solid color with black trim and writing. If anybody thinks they know what I’m talking about, let me know. I’d love to track them down.
