The skull has stong religious connotations as a symbol of death in India, Nepal and Tibet. The skull necklace is an iconographic memento mori worn by the Hindu gods Siva and Kali and Nepalese deities such as Kurukulla. Their devotees also wear necklaces and prayer beads carved
out of animal and human bone.
Skull beads are still used on malla (prayer beads such as the one on the plaque) in Nepal today. They can be worn as necklaces, but are most offen for devotional practices. They have also become popular in America with the resurgence of kali and Siva worship.
