Meet a Meso Valued Member
Our own Leah Enkidu is this edition's valued member.

Leah is among the most talented members of Ancient Worlds, serving as Scribe, City Builder, and leading Harp & Cymbal, Meso's group for world music.
Perhaps her crowning achievement has been the Babylonian Beat, the only clay tablet you'll ever need to read. Her endearing humor and verve make the Beat one of the true pleasures of Ancient Worlds.

Thanks for everything, Leah. You're a shining star!

Tiniariwen — A Must Listen!
The band Tinariwen has one of the most unlikely stories in all of pop music. The Malian guitar slingers are all former Toureg rebels who once took up arms against their government. In the 1980s, while living in refugee and military training camps in Algeria and Libya, they came into contact with Western pop music for the first time. Inspired by the music of Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and others, they picked up electric guitars to express their own reality. Eventually, when peace was established in the mid-1990s, the rebels laid down their arms, and Tinariwen traded in their guns for guitars once and for all—becoming an international sensation in the process... ACTA DIURNAMesopotamian World News

My dears! Ear is simply ECSTATIC to be back in Babylon... whoops, that's Mesopotamia! Ear is thrilled! There are soooo many more keyholes to eavesdrop!

Oh do stop your whining. Of COURSE there are keyholes! Don't tell me they haven't been invented yet! *sniff* Ear suspects you haven't heard about all the chastity belts in King Zig's various harems! Hrmmmmmph!

Speaking of harems, Ear has been diligent in tracking down these lascivious lairs of iniquity! Do you know, chickies, that there are no less than three in Meso? Ear won't mention where they are (Ear doesn't want to be accused of contributing to the simply awful reputation of the Babylunatics, the Persiadesiacs, or the Analtolians), but be assured, dears, there is sin aplenty going on. Ear can't wait! TeeHee.

Ear has been ever so thoroughly investigating the crooks and nannies of dear Meso's neighborhoods. So far Ear has found 48 keyholes. Ear is overwhelmed. With so much dirt about, Ear may have to take on an assistant. Ear thinks that may not be a bad thing. Ear has missed Nose terribly, especially since Nose's recent addiction to nasal spray has been cured. Ear sympathises. Life was not worth living before Ear's waxectomy... oh, but Ear digresses. Guilty Ear wag!

Ear doesn't know about you, but Ear thinks the Meso PTB (that's Powers that Be for those who aren't in the know!) should institute some sort of border patrol. Ear is shuddering at some of the people who have taken up residence, well, Ear can't believe they'd be welcome anywhere! One look at the goings on in the Kash Bowl should convince anyone!

Ear won't let off the Sumeraholics, either! A little birdie (Ear thinks it was a Hoopoe, but it might have been Apiladey practicing his birdcalls!) tells Ear that the King of Kish can be found in one of those primitive places with that loathsome, nasty-smelling oil. Ear sent messages of sympathy to the mighty King, but then Ear found out from dear little birdie that the Kingster was really on a recruiting trip for his harems! Little birdie filled Ear in on all the details.

...Ear needs a fan.

...Ear is very hot after listening to this lustful activity.

...Ear is going to go take a cold shower now.

...More next time, dears!

Ear Needs You!

Dears, the Ear has arrived, as they say!

Ear has been prowling the most private parts of Meso and Ear is here to tell you that there are scandalous, simply scandalous goings on.

Ear confesses. Ear is delighted to find out the deepest, darkest secrets of the Mesomaniacs. Ear just loves to tell all.

In fact, Ear will be spreading all of Meso's most... interesting... tidbits of news in the Acta. Perhaps Ear will even find denizens of society who are worthy of an interview!

I must say, dears, that Meso is most fertile ground for delicious gossip. However, to make sure that Ear doesn't miss a bit of scintillating dirt, do drop by the Bitum and leave a message.

Ear is ... all ears!

New concern over fate of Iraqi antiquities

Insider: Embattled Tablets Volume 59 Number 5, September/October 2006
A collection of cuneiform tablets from the Iranian site of Persepolis are at the center of a legal battle in Chicago that has worried museum curators across the country. This July, a federal judge upheld a decision that could open the way to the seizure and auctioning off of the collection, which is on loan from Iran to the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute. The proceeds would compensate victims of a 1997 suicide bombing in Jerusalem... (Archaeology Magazine Insider)

The Pisa Wreck
Privet iz Krime! Greetings and welcome to the 2006 Black Sea Shipwrecks Research Project's Interactive Dig. Please join us, a team of dedicated divers and students from Brown University and Colby College, on our expedition to the northern coast of the Black Sea. We will be collaborating with a Ukrainian group from the University of Kiev's Center for Underwater Archaeology (CUA) in the investigation and excavation of a thirteenth-century shipwreck in the Sudak Bay. Our expedition will be diving until mid-August, and I'll update you on our progress every few days, as well as give you a look into a fascinating region rarely visited by Western tourists. Feel free to ask any questions you may have on the bulletin board, and I'll try to answer them in my next posting. Davay! We're off!... (Archaeology Magazine Interactive Digs)
