Tablinum

In every Roman domus, there is a tablinum - an area just behind the entry atrium which serves both as a sort of study and a place for visiting with guests, patrons, or clients. Welcome!

Here is my secretary, Strabo. He was purchased by my father for me and was my original pedagogue, taking me to a very rare girl's school that used to be run by a peculiar spinsterish lady on the Aventine Hill. Like Cicero's Tiro, I don't know what I would do without Strabo! He keeps track of my library and writes all my letters with a far more elegant Greek, if necessary, than my own.

In the Roman world, the tablinum is a man's realm - here he sees his clients privately, works on his letters, reads his books, but women are supposed to do none of these things. My house is a little unusual!
