This ancient hill fort was the capital of the Dumnonii tribe, who mined tin and iron and
traded with the Phoenecians and the Greeks. When the Romans arrived around 50 AD, they erected proper Roman Walls atop the earthen embankment of their fort and then, according to Ptolemy. assigned them to a certain "quarter".
