Io, Saturnalia !
If you missed Saturnalia, you really missed out. For those still nursing virtual hangovers, I doubt that you missed anything. Needless to say, this year was the best year ever. Well, the best year until next year’s Saturnalia.
Missed out and feeling bad? Just click on any link that catches your eye and find out what happened. Mark your calendars for next year. Like I said, it’ll be the best ever. I could rave forever, but will spare you from that cruel and unusual punishment.
Darn Geneva Convention…
Highlights included:
Tobius Tullius did amazing & hilarious flash cards during the unbinding and rebinding of Saturn. You know you want to take a look at them and then tell him how cool they are. Give into that impulse.
A caption contest. Insert funny remark here.
Stories and Poems of the Season. You have to look at this thread just for the Roman version of “A Christmas Carol.”
Consult the Sybil. Anyone remember their favorite vitamin? Snowflake poem? Any other weird task?
Publius's The Republic at War as told by Varius Nautius Maximus.
Really, really cool plaques.
Three quizzes:
Decius Aemilus made a wonderful Lord of Misrule. Emphasis on rule, of course.
A wonderful potluck with great recipes. I’m still drooling.
Laurels and a gang of helpers did an amazing scavenger hunt. The Victorix of Rome was Leela Antonius . Mention also goes to second placer Calpurnia Caesar and third place Ullr Egilsson. Applause goes to anyone who didn’t give up. You did better than I did.
Amazingly, Senex higgledy-piggledyed his way through another advent calendar. How he can do it every year is beyond me. I look forward to seeing your next project Senex and wonder if you super glued a muse to your monitor. It's about the only reason I can come up with.
Friends, Romans, Countrymen, Lend Me Your Ears...
A new Latin course for beginners and advanced students has recently started at Schola Linguae Latinae. Interested? Then go. There's no need for Latin to look like Greek to you. Stop groaning because the pun couldn't have been that bad..
I don’t know about everyone else, but winter is almost bearable when eating something delicious. I have no idea why the biggest eating holidays take place in winter, but they do. As long as you have your recipies out, Maria Marius and Hilarity Hatshepsut are starting a Roman cookbook and everyone is invited to contribute. Share your favorite foods, both ancient and modern, with everyone else and fire up your ovens. With luck, you can save on energy bills. Contact Maria for details.
Not the Missing Link:
Who needs a metal detector? Certainly not these moles. Think they get a finder's fee? Makes you really want to redefine garden pests, right?
Writing bug takes on pandemic proportions...
Romans have caught the writing bug this winter and no doctor is able to find a cure. My guess is that this cold weather is making everyone stay inside and make themselves useful while trying to get warm. Needless to say, high amounts of great projects have graced the city of Rome. Someone or something, I don’t know which, has lit a fire and big things are happening. Major revitalization is everywhere and you can help get things buzzing. Who wants to be a buzz kill anyway ?
Tenth Muse has a poetry contest about winter. It ends February 2nd, so why not enter while hoping that spring comes early? It beats just sitting around griping about the weather, but so does anything. Take the faux sunlight light bulb out of your desk lamp and shoot rubber bands at your muse until she helps out.
FUNDAMINA ROMAE is looking like things just might get interesting. Rumor has it that Heraklia is doing a project that involves Livy’s early history of Rome. Word on the street is that she’s going to retell them in modern format. History light, but in a good way. Think of stories being made so that you want to read them to your children or actually make sense. Prepare for the retellings of Horatio at the Bridge and the Rape of Lucretia. Personally, I look forward to reading them just to see the great job that’s sure to be done. At the very least, it’s an enjoyable fresh idea. Talk to Heraklia or Maria Marius if you want to help.
Life getting you down lately? Watched 15 seconds of a soap opera and thought you could do a better job? Bored? Looking for a writing challenge? If any of the above applies to you, then check out As the Tiber flows and see what you can come up with. Anything probably goes and clichés are expected. Nothing’s wrong with having some fun. You historical writers might find a change will do you good. This would be a really great chance for beginning role play and I hope that beginners check it out.
Springfest & Volunteers:
Spring will be here shortly and that means Spring Fest. Yes, that time of year is upon us and people are going to start buzzing like bees. If you loved last year, why not help make this year better? If you hated it, then why not change things from the inside? Contact one of our three great scribes and ask what you can do to help or just post your ideas on the new Roman Springfest 2006 thread. Enjoy slacking? Feel free to leave them ideas about what you want to see. Be careful what you wish for, because hopefully you’ll get your wish.
Don't forget to tell your scribes how wonderful they are. If you think you could do a better job, let them know and they'll sign you up to help out. You have group news and it's not listed here? Even my cats can't communicate with me via telepathy. Since not even the infamous Feline Mind Meld works, you'll just have to contact me if you want your information in.
