The meaning of this name is: "the man from Hattusas". Hattusilis I, a Hittite Prince, (1650 - 1620) changed his name to this after he took up residence in the (then deserted) city of Hattusas. Before the name change, he was known as Labarnas II. This prince was an aggressive leader, who led his armies south and found the wealth of Mesopotamia very tempting. He successfully conquered several cities before losing his life in a battle for Aleppo - the then capitol of the Amorite empire of Iamhad. Some of his life-story is told in a fragmentary work, the annals of Hattusilis.

After Hattusilis’ death, his successor, an adopted son by the name of Mursilis I, took up the command and conquered Aleppo. Mursilis I then and moved on to conquer Carkemish and even Babylon.
