NICE GOING!
THAT’S QUITE A FIND!

GergoviaMask You are hot, dry and dusty from your search of the Celtic Oppidum atop the hill. What did you have to show for your troubles? Nothing! Same with the Roman camp which you hopefully investigated thoroughly. It was not until you took a walk in the wild woods, in an attempt to cool off, that you discovered a strange-looking jumble of rocks. A large, flat slab of stone, is supported on a number of smaller stones. There appears to be a small opening on the eastern side… an entrance into the hollow area. This is a wedge tomb, and was one of the common methods of burial in this part of the world. Being the adventurous soul that you are, you crawl into the dark interior. When your eyes finally adjust to the lack of sunlight, you notice a golden glint in the dirt and debris of one corner. Digging carefully, you unearth a beautiful golden mask of some ancient Goddess. If you were to take this to and expert on antiquities, they might decide this is a river goddess, because of the rippling lines coming from her mouth. River Goddesses stood high in the Celtic pantheon. One of the main ones, Danu, gave her name to the Danube River, and her memory is still respected in Eireland.

Well now! I suppose we should be off on the next leg of our journey of discovery. We shall ride the River Alier for a ways, as some kindhearted person has provided us with canoes. Then we will cross overland to a hilltop near the River Saône. This oppidum is called:

BIBRACTE!
