3rd in series of ACTA articles on persona development.
In last month’s ACTA, I said I was going to write about what to do after you finish researching a new persona this month. I lied. I tried writing about this, but after writing only one paragraph I gave up. Everything I can say about the topic is this:

Don’t use all your historical tidbits in 1 post; pace yourself. Integrate the information naturally and smoothly in your role playing.

This is all pretty standard/straight forward, but most of all, it’s obvious! After a bit of brainstorming, I came up with offering more practical help and information. Here is an annotated list of links I’ve come across that might help you in your research. Hopefully in future months I’ll have the opportunity to do similar lists for AWs other worlds.

Avatar Inspiration Sources: Sometimes I get inspired for a new persona after stumbling across the perfect image/painting for an avatar. Here are some links that will hopefully help you get inspired!

  • Women in Greek Myths - The gallery at this site is an outstanding collection of artwork/portrayals of just about every female that has ever appeared in Greek myths. For example, there are seven different paintings for Pygmalion. There is a separate bio for most of these women, along with a single page for important men in these myths. A great source!
  • Hellenistic Greek Sculpture - Thumbnails that link to larger images of these statues. An interesting variety of images straight from the Hellenistic period.
  • SciFiOne - Fine Art Shows - Click on the various historical art thumbnail menus for a rich variety of images. Includes many paintings by the ever popular John William Godward. Nicely laid out pages. Major drawback – you have to go back to the main menu to browse between pages.

Finished Avatar Sources: Some sources for already completed avatars.

  • Avatar Avenue - Arachne's Web very own thread for avatars. You'll find all kinds of help here if you don't see an avatar that really "fits" you, there are people who can help you create a special one.
  • Antiquated Ideas - Mediterranean Avatars for both men and women. Some very nice & historically accurate avatars.
  • Laurel's Corner - This specific page has nice Roman &/or Greek insprired avatars available. Laurel has others linked to from here.

Daily Life: If you want to role play that you’re living the life, you need to know what the life was like!

  • Ancient Greece - Great gateway to life in Ancient Greece. Has links to a variety of information, including daily life, art, maps and more. History Link 101also has information on many other worlds and regions of AW.
  • The Ancient Greek World - The Ancient Greek World virtual gallery at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. While this site is just a gallery of items the average Greek household would have, I find these items very telling about the population and culture of a people.
  • Daily Life of the Athenian - Nice essay that outlines many aspects of everyday life.

Maps: Gotta know the area in which you live! It’s hard to prosper if you get lost all the time.

  • Map of Ancient Greek World - Simple & straightforward map of the region. Very clear & easy to read.
  • Ancient Greece Map - Nice topographical map of the region. Includes links to other maps as well.
  • Cultural Map of Hellas - Site by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Clickable map that allows you to see what museums and archeological sites are in each region. Very nice!

I hope these links help you in your persona/character development! These are all just basic, starter links. Feel free to drop me a note if you have any additions to my lists!
