Description of this calendar system
The Haab calender is similar to the calendar we use nowadays, it consists of months of a set amount of days. Here the similarity ends, because not only the amount of days differs from the Gregorian calendar, also the amount of months. And still the solar year of the Maya consists of a little more then 365 days.
The Haab has a total of 19 months, 18 of them have twenty days and these are followed by a very short one, consisting of only five days. The days (Kin) in the Haab months (Uinal) are numbered. not from 1-20, but from 0-19 (0-4 for the last month). The names of the months are: Pop, Uo, Zip, Zotz, Zec, Xul, Yaxkin, Mol, Chen, Yax, Zac, Ceh, Mac, Kankin, Muan, Pax, Kayab, Kumku and Uayeb. What does that look like? 0 pop, 1 pop, 2 pop - 19 pop, 0 uo, 1 uo etc. till 4 uayeb. Then the calendar starts again with 0 pop. 18 x 20 (360) + 1x 5 ( 5 ) = 365 days (kin) in one Haab. After 52* years they insert 13 "leapdays", to stay tuned with the completion of one solar circle, which takes about 365,2420 days. 365 x 52 = 18980 + 13 = 18993 / 52 = 365,25. |
