Dumnonii, Dyfneint, or Kernyw is known today as the West Country.
DUMNONII.DYFNEINT. KERNYW
Known today as the "West Country", Dyfneint encompassed Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, even possibly Breton lands at some point. The Dumnonii tribe ruled this area. They were among the most powerful British Celtic tribes. Exeter is usually considered the capital but since the Dumnonian royal families were always on the move, they had several different important places. There is the Iron age Hillfort of Cadbury Castle in Somerset, as well as Tintagel and Dunster. The last king of Dumnonia died in 875, after which time the area fell fully under Saxon rule. In the 19th century, its unique language was lost. But the West Country has proudly maintained a Celtic identity that is still strong today.
