Rarely, a classicist can find his or her way to being both popular and well-respected, and Professor Mary Beard has managed that difficult balancing act. From her best-selling books on ancient Rome to her blog with running, ironic classical commentary, "A Don's Life", for the London Times, she has helped to rewrite the life of a modern classical scholar.

Winifred Mary Beard (born 1 January 1955) is Professor of Classics at the University of Cambridge and is a fellow of Newnham College. She is the Classics editor of the Times Literary Supplement. Her frequent media appearances and sometimes controversial public statements have led to her being described as "Britain's best-known classicist". (for a more in-depth biography, she rates her own lengthy Wiki entry at Mary Beard.).

Welcome Professor Beard January 17-23, 2010, to discuss ancient Rome in modern times!
