Three ways to communicate at AncientWorlds

ComPanel and Telegrams

When you log in, you will notice a small Java-enabled registration console. This is called the "ComPanel (see example below)."

ComPanel

As you can see it is a long, skinny rectangular window that says, "Welcome..." with your log in name or a welcome to you as guest if you have not logged in. Most of the time, you will probably minimize this to get it out of your way. But be careful - don't close it! When you need it, the ComPanel can be extremely helpful. By clicking on your own name you can go to your own home (also called a "domus," or "oikos."). The ComPanel also shows you all the other visitors that are currently logged into Ancient Worlds. By clicking on one of their names, you can go and visit their home page or send them a telegram. Visiting other users' home pages is one of the most popular activities in Ancient Worlds. Make sure you go visit the pages of the Patrons. Since they are paying members with a substantial commitment to the site they tend to have more ornate and interesting homes, replete with fantastic art and animated avatars!

If you don't want to receive grams, you'll click the grams off link at the top of the ComPanel, beneath your name. If you see a citizen online who has no "grams" link next to their name in the ComPanel, it's because they aren't accepting grams either! The number of grams you can send is limited based on your member level. See the subscription page for details.. Though grams sent to admin (Scribes, Demigods, Cybergods) count towards your gram limit, you are able to gram admin after you have reached your limit for the day.

Gram logs are also available for subscribed Patrons. The logs include all telegrams you have sent in a calendar order, can be found at your home. On the right side, right below your entrance picture, there is a listing of many items including your different rooms, your posts, messages, grams, and image gallery. Click on the "grams" link and you will be taken to your home.

Home Messages

There are two ways of communicating when the person you wish to contact is offline. One can send an offline gram from the person's home, where there is a link next to the person's avatar. The other way is to leave a message at the person's home.

You'll know that there are messages waiting right after you have logged in. Also, when you visit your home, the message scroll with be flapping. Click on the scroll to go to today's messages. If you don't see a message, click on the link for the current month to open the calendar. You'll see unread messages marked in red.

If you have the person's name one your friends list, you can click on his/her first name at your home and go to the person's home. If you don't have the name there, it is often easier to type to the address line the URL of the person's home. At AncientWorlds, homes are always of this type: http://www.ancientworlds.net/member/lastname/firstname. For example, if I were to go to Cornellia Cornelius's home, I would type in: http://www.ancientworlds.net/member/Cornelius/Cornellia.

At the person's home, right from the avatar is a scroll. Click on it and you are taken to the person's message board. Type your message in the white textarea that appears, and add a salutation and a "signature" as you please. Note that you can choose from the menu a format for your text. If you include HTML, use the "HTML" option. Also notice that if you choose "PLAIN," your line spacing will not show in the message when you have submitted it. Using HTML tags (and choosing "HTML" from the menu) helps with this.

Here an example. If you choose "HTML" from the menu, and:

type in this text:
