Nearly every man was trained as a warrior, but most did other work as well, such as farming. Successful warriors could rise in society from very poor beginnings. Once a man had taken four prisoners he was rewarded with important jobs, gifts of clothing, land and slaves. He also became a member of the nobility. It was even possible for an ordinary warrior to become one of the four warlords, who were second only to the king.
