From an early age, we are taught to loathe bugs but the polka-dotted little ladybugs are just so lovable! They are almost universally considered to be good luck. Maybe that's because just one ladybug can eat an amazing amount of crop-spoiling aphids, perhaps hundreds of them in one day, not to mention having an insatiable appetite for mealybugs, greenflies and all kinds of scale insects. To make your garden attractive to ladybugs, avoid using chemical pesticides, and keep a variety of water-sources available such a bird baths, fountains or backyard ponds. Ladybug boxes can be filled with compost to encourage nesting and egg-laying.
