That is a very interesting explanation, I had not found in the books I had read anything about this event.
So what with the diminishing Empire and natural disaster it does add more to the understanding of why Iconoclasm took place.

I can ask now, why did something like this not occur 200 years before under the reign of Justinian, which saw political tumult and many natural disasters like earthquakes and famine?
