    the teachers room

    Dear commilitones,

Several weeks ago, Pomponia and I discussed the possibility to open a "teachers room" in the Schola Linguae Latinae. Since that moment, we have thought of this several times, but due to RL obligations and all kinds of other things, we never came to do it. Now that some other Latin teachers online have thought it a good idea to create such a board, here it is: Pomponia's COLLOQVIVM DOCTVM!

This board is readable for all members level 2 and higher, but please, dear tirones and discipuli, we ask you not to post here, since teachers need to be by themselves and among eachother form time to time to discuss things dealing with the Latin language and teaching. You are free to read, but please, don't post in this thread, thank you.

Pomponia, since this was originally your project on the SLL, the board is dedicated to and hosted by you. If you would like to have the name of the board changed, you are of course free to do so!*s*

    • ROME in Latin

        Salvete, cives grammaticique Romani!

For some time, I have been dealing with the issue of getting the HBO company and the BBC to know that it would be a very interesting thing to have the "ROME" series out on DVD, eventually, with at least one extra option, namely Latin subtitles. Voice dubbing in Latin would be extremely formidable, but also very costly, so if the subtitles could be realized, that would already be great!

What have I been doing so far, to get this under the attention of the persons in high places?

I have sent emails to various divisions of the HBO company and the BBC and I have sent a letter to the BBC with a proposal of this idea and my offer to take on the job, if they are willing to have the item. I am planning to send a similar letter to the HBO company after getting the right address where to send to.

So far, I have been posting on the HBO site boards, where I have my own thread on "Rome in Latin", which is visited by people who are serious readers and posters and who find the idea very interesting. Because there have not been that many and clear reactions from both the HBO company and the BBC, some posters have come up with the idea of having a petition on the HBO official Rome site boards for the Latin language as an option on the series' DVD's for educational reasons and reasons of interest. In fact, some Latin is used by the characters in the series as well. Why not have a fully integrated Latin subtitling option then?

I don't have any script texts yet. What I have been working on to translate into Lati so far, are texts used in the video captions on the HBO Official Rome site, which are episode trailers. They can be downloaded and watched through Real Player or Quick Time Player. I watch these captions, write down the English texts that are clear enough and I translate these lines. Mostly, they are small dialogs or single lines. You can find these translations in the "Rome in Latin" thread on the HBO/Rome boards and in my journal Acta Tanaquilis.

Maybe you are interested to hear how this will end or you agree that Latin subtitles should become an option on the "ROME" series' DVD's. If you are, let me know. Even if you are more interested in this than giving support, let me know...

    • Sure, R+!

The more people know about this, the better! Please, let as many people know as you can! This undertaking can use all the support there can be! If some of them happen to know how to reach HBO by phone or have an address that might be really useful, I would be very glad to have it! Active support will be highly appreciated!
